GARDEN ROUTE EXPLORER
The Garden Route on the South African south-eastern coastline is perhaps the most iconic motorcycle touring areas of the country. The Garden Route has become a 'must see' for most visitors to South Africa with good reason: you can’t help but be seduced by its glorious natural beauty.
With breathtaking vista's to be found around almost every corner, the range of topography, vegetation, wildlife and outdoor activities offered throughout this 'foot of Africa' is remarkable. The coast is dotted with excellent beaches, while inland you’ll find picturesque lagoons and lakes, rolling hills and eventually the mountains of the Outeniqua and Tsitsikamma ranges that divide the Garden Route from the arid Little Karoo. While adjacent to the Garden Route, the Little Karoo is often incorporated into tours of the region for its stark - yet complimentary, solitude and open spaces.
The ancient indigenous forests that line the coast from Wilderness to Knysna offer adventure trails and hiking, birdwatching, canoeing on the rivers, sliding through the tree canopy or simply taking an easy walk through the forest to gasp at the size of a Yellowwood tree that's over 600 years old.
Wildlife enthusiasts will enjoy spotting brilliant green and red Knysna loeries or maybe even catching sight of one of the near-mythical elephants said to inhabit the forests along the coast.
This tour aims to create lasting memories of this magnificent region. Definitely one for couples and people looking for something quite different.
Average Daily Distance
The tour starts with us heading South from Pretoria via the eastern Free State to the town of Fouriesburg. After a brief stopover in Clarens, we make for our first overnight stop in Ladybrand.
Day two sees us travel around the Kingdom of Lesotho to Aliwal North, the entry-point of the Eastern Cape. After a brief stop, we continue south towards Middelburg and our next overnight stop in historic Graaf Reinet in the heart of the Karoo.
After a morning ride through the Valley of Desolation outside Graaf Reinet, we head through Jansenville and Steytlerville, to our next overnight in George. En-route, we pass through the Bavianskloof and some of the most inspiring scenery along the Karoo route.
With George as our base tonight, we head-out from this coastal town along some of the really great mountain passes back into Oudtshoorn and into the little Karoo town of Prins Albert. We return to George for the evening.
Day five sees us travel down the coast to Mossel Bay and on to Riversdal and Ladismith before overnighting in Oudtshoorn. Again, we traverse some of the magnificent passes in the region.
After breakfast today, we start our road back home, travelling via De Rust, Uniondale and Willowmore before heading through Graaf Reinet to our overnight stop in Bloemfontein - the Rose Capital, in the Free State.
This last day of the tour will see us travel through the Free State to Pretoria via Brandfort and Klerksdorp.
