South Africa is said to be a 'world in one country', and perhaps this tour highlights the claim perfectly. The 'great' North includes two of the country's largest Provinces - the North West and Northern Cape, but our tour incorporates a third - the Free State as well.
At first sight, the region appears to offer little for visitors, but it is home to the 'diamond capital of the world' - Kimberley; the 'font of Christianity in Africa' - Kuruman and the largest expanse of sand in the world - the Kalahari. Our tour incorporates all of these highlights on a route that will leave you wanting more.
In addition to the natural wealth and abundance that can be found in the region it is also home to a collection of historic towns, sites and attractions that cast a light on to the modern South Africa of today. Scene of many battles in the Anglo Boer War, it also reflects the battle of man against nature in what must have been an inhospitable wilderness to early settlers.
Our tour takes us from the modern metropolis of Pretoria, through the maize-belt of the North West and into the vastness of the Kalahari and Northern Cape. Along the way, we will explore some of the history and majesty of the region, and visits to communities and attractions along this route are sure to remain in your memory for years to come.
Join us on what will prove a unique wilderness route.
Average Daily Distance
We meet at our base and head-out towards the university city of Potchefstroom. From here we travel to Vryburg before reaching Kuruman for our first overnight stop.
Day two will see us travel across the vastness of the North West visiting towns such as Kathu (the richest iron-ore mine in the world) and Olifantshoek, before reaching Upington - our second stop. Upington is the entrance to the Northern Cape and the start of the Orange River Valley route, and a town worth exploring.
From Upington, our route takes us through the Orange River Valley to Kakamas and the mighty Augrabies Falls. Here we take some time to explore the Augrabies National Park before moving on to Pofadder - in the heart of Bushmanland.
Our route takes us from Pofadder south towards Calvinia in the middle of the Hantam, before we turn to begin our homeward journey. Tonight we stay at Victoria West in the Great Karoo.
After leaving Victoria West, we will travel via De Aar before reaching our last overnight stop in the City of Kimberley. A tour of the diamond mine and city rounds our day off.
After breakfast, we travel back to Pretoria via Klerksdorp and Krugersdorp, reaching our base in the afternoon.
