West Coast Explorer
When one thinks of the West Coast of South Africa, one can't help but think of the wild flowers of Namaqualand, surely one of the great natural events on South Africa's annual calendar. But the West Coast is more than just Namaqualand, and this tour takes you a little deeper into the heart of the region.
The West Coast is generally an arid region, but it provides some of the most remarkable scenic beauty in the country - across a vast and yet incredibly hospitable part of Africa. Our tour takes us from Cape Town to the northern point at Springbok, and down through Calvinia and the Hantam region.
From the sophistication of Cape Town, the West Coast allows us to experience everything from the more than 4000 flower species of Namaqualand (season dependent), to the coastal beauty of Langebaan and Lamberts Bay; the vastness of Calvinia and the unique Ceres and Wellington fruit-growing region.
This tour is ideal for pillion riders and avoids all sand and gravel routes. We will experience everything from Namaqualand to the Breede River Valley and the route includes the really breathtaking Bains Kloof Pass.
Average Daily Distance
We depart Cape Town via Langebaan where we have a chance to explore this wonderful seaside resort town. From Langebaan, our route takes us along the coast to Vredenberg, Veldrif and Lamberts Bay and the Sandveld, before we head inland to our first overnight stop in Clanwilliam.
We are now in the famed Namaqualand region, and today our ride takes us from Clanwilliam at the foot of the Cederberg, along the Olifants River Valley to the flowers in Vanrhynsdorp, Nieuwoudtville and Kamieskroon, before we reach Springbok - our next overnight stop.
Springbok marks the turning point of the tour as we head inland towards Loeriesfontein and our overnight stop in Calvinia - the heart of the Hantam region. This route takes us through some of the most amazing landscapes and is sure to leave you with a sense of peace.
We travel from Calvinia, down the escarpment to Clanwilliam once again. From Clanwilliam, we travel South to Citrusdal before leaving the N7 and heading inland via the Middelburg and Gyde passes to Prince Alfred Hamlet and the town of Ceres in the heart of the Breede River Valley. We overnight in Tulbagh after travelling through Mitchell's Pass.
We start the final leg of the tour today - heading from Ceres to the town of Tulbagh and then we backtrack to the Baines Kloof Pass to Wellington. From Wellington, we travel back to Cape Town via Paarl.

What can you expect?
This tour will let you experience the 'flower season' in season, but it offers much more. The region is truly diverse, and this tour aims to give you a taste of the 'hidden' West Coast. We travel to the Hantam and Swartland regions as part of the tour - purely because of the stark contrasts that they each have with one another, and this provides a more holistic look at what must surely be one of the great routes in South Africa.
